Poem: Teacher, I Want to See

The following poem finds its rooting in this amazing scene in Mark 10 where Jesus heals a blind man named Bartimaeus. Bartimaeus calls out to Jesus, using the messianic title, "Son of David." Not only does he believe that Jesus can heal him, but he also trusts that Jesus is the one that the world has been waiting for: the Messiah. Jesus then heals the man while commending his faith, and Bartimaeus, in turn, follows Jesus. The following poem was written for Disability Awareness Sunday years ago.

Teacher I Want to See

Teacher, I want to see

take my eyes in your hands

set them into the sockets of the sky

like you premised the planets

patterning their movements

around your gravitational pull.

Teacher, I want to dance

shaking my hips like the dust

in the presence of your glory,

ignoring accusations

that look like faces

in awe of new found feet.

Teacher, I want to feel

your promises in my veins

drawing me forth into

true humanness

where autonomy is as

fleeting as a whisper.

Teacher, I want to hear

the timbre of your voice,

your name like sonnets,

upon my lips

dying to escape, to be

beheld in the air like vapor.

Teacher, I want to love

like you break for the broken

shattering lines in the sand

while guilty stones

collect at your sandals

unfit though they are to untie.

Teacher, I want to dwell

in the abyss of your mercy,

barricaded in the tent of

newness of life

clamoring for resurrection

feeling for scars that attest.

Teacher, I want to grow

where branches are heavy

and fingers are figs

ripe with reality,

soil & roots reveal what is true

You are making all things new.

Walking in the way of Jesus together,
